Happy Labor Day

On Monday, we celebrate Labor Day. This holiday honors the workers who make our country run each and every day. As a New York union, the holiday holds more importance especially since it was the New York City Labor Council that held the first September celebration of Labor Day in 1882.

As union members, this is also a holiday to remember that all of the rights we often take for granted were not given to us by a benevolent boss but were fought for by men and women like yourselves. Everything from the right to bargain for a contract to overtime pay and the weekend was achieved through workers banding together and demanding a better life. I know that the members of Local 1104 know this well as many of our strikes and actions have resulted in better lives for our members. Our strength comes from our unity.

I hope that everyone has a Happy and Safe Labor Day.
